Honours Diploma level are to attempt to provide professional comeptence then additional funds beyond those required to provide an academically biassed course will be needed in order to attract staff with the necessary professional competence and to provide the necessary range of facilities.
If the College wishes to proceed with the development of courses in Civil Engineering of a standard comparable to those for comparable students at the Polytechnic then the full time staff team will need to be enlarged. That staff team will need carefully to establish the precise aims of the course to be offered and to devise a course to fit the aims. There is a need for the staff to work as a team in this exercise if the course is to achieve an overall coherence. A new Head of Department will be needed to develop the revised course to lead the course team, and to exploit the expertise of existing members of staff. The department staff will need advice on course development.
