the Baptist College. The College hopes that this visit will result in the Honours Diploma holders being granted exemption from all the CEI part II examinations. Holders of the old four year diploma from the Baptist College are all granted exemption from the CEI part I examinations.

10.2 The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers currently uses the

CEI examinations as the academic requirement for membership, but finds that membership of the UK based professional institutions is still the first choice for many since the HK PWD requires such for employment.

10.3 There is little evidence of Baptist College students

proceeding to take CEI examinations since most of those who do proceed to professional engineering studies do so by enrolling in degree courses in the UK or in some cases by direct access to postgraduate courses.

10.4

The situtation in the Polytehnic is that the Higher Diplomates are exempted from part I examinations and are allowed entry to the part II examinations. The Associateship course is designed to prepare students for CEI part II examinations and may be taken full-time or by part-time study. The students' success on the CEI part II examinations is excellent apart from the performance on the Engineer in Society paper.

STAFF

Condition of Service for Staff

The most serious problem which faces the Baptist College diploma courses is the absence of a course team which has the capacity to develop and teach the course within an academic and professional milieu appropriate to a course in civil and structural engineering. There are numerous related aspects but the root cause is clearly the absence. of adequate finance for the payment of staff at a level which will attract and retain staff of the necessary professional quality.
