INTRODUCTION

The CNAA was asked to advise the Director of Education on steps which would need to be taken to ensure that each of the courses covered by the comparability exercise attained and continued to attain an academic level at least comparable to the parallel courses in the Hong Kong Polytechnic.

In so far as Civil Engineering is concerned therefore the brief for the visit by the Civil Engineering members was to compare:-

(i) the new 3 year Honours Diploma course, the first two years of which forms the Senior Diploma course, in Civil Engineering as offered in the department of Civil Engineering at the Baptist College, with

(ii) the existing 3 year Higher Diploma courses in

Civil Engineering and in Structural Engineering, and the subsequent 7 month Associateship course in Civil and Structural Engineering offered in the Civil and Structural Engineering Department at the Polytechnic.

The purpose of the visit was not to assess the courses at the Polytechnic, but in carrying out their comparison members inevitably had to relate one or other course to some basis of comparison having generally accepted currency. For this purpose the CEI part II for which the Polytechnic's Associateship course prepares students was the most suitable.
