HONG KONG POLYTECHNIC

The senior staff within the Computer Centre are as follows:

one Head, one Computer Manager, two Systems Analysts, three Senior Programmers and one Operations Controller.

In addition, there are several programmers and data preparation staff. The Computer Centre supports the educational and administrative needs of the Polytechnic and it is responsible for the liaison with academic and administrative departments, and for terminal maintenance. The Centre employs specialist staff for this latter area of work. The Polytechnic machines

three Digital Equipment Corporation PDP 11/70's and a Data General Corporation NOVA 3/12. Each PDP 11/70 has 128K words of core memory, 512K words of Ampex Add-on core memory, two 88 megabyte disk drives, two 300 megabyte Ampex disk drives and a magnetic tape drive.

are:

The NOVA has 80K words of core memory, two 25 Megabyte disk drives, a magnetic tape unit, a dual diskette system, a line printer, a card reader and a VERSATEC printer/plotter.

Currently connected to these machines are 220 VOU's, 57 telex style terminals and two 300 1pm line printers. Terminals are normally clustered in laboratories in groups of eight or sixteen. It is the desire of the computer centre to increase the number of terminals available and to locate output devices with each laboratory cluster. In addition, networking facilities currently under development at the Universities and Polytechnic Computer Centre (UPCC) will give access to further computing facilities.

A Megatek Graphics System is also available and the professional keypunch operators use a GCS 2100 Data Entry System. The Centre has access to an ICL 1904S computer at UPCC for batch work and recent aquisitions by the computer centre are two ECLIPSE M/600 and an IBM 3031.

The range of software packages is very extensive and the full range of packages of the International Mathematical and Statistical Library is available on the Data General Eclipse M/600 and the IBM 3031. In addition, a full range of packages are available on the PDP 11/70's. In the general, the available computer facilities and support staffing is good for the student population of 15,000 part-timers, 4000 on day release and 7,000 full-time students.
