a single recommended text (North American system). Several units are too ambitious (recognised by staff and students). There are certain instances of significant overlap. The Mathematics required is very demanding.

(In the Honours Diploma, the choice of certain electives is questionable, in view of limited resources).

Education/training in computing is minimal, and the little instruction given is taught by a members of the Physics Department.

Laboratory Work/Project

HKBC Comment

The laboratory scheme does not generally relate to the content of the year in which it appears; the aim is to educate students in the experimental method.

Opportunity for open mini-projects is very limited. The range of experiments is severely limited by lack of resources. There are no interactive computing facilities and the Physics Department hardware is limited to one PET; virtually no computer software exists.

Laboratory sheets are in need of revision in certain cases. There is no intention to offer major experimental projects.

Teaching Methods/Educational Technology

HKP Factual

All forms of tuition are utilised. The Central Polytechnic Educational Technology unit is very strong.

HKBC Factual

Tuition is by formal lecture, mainly in Chinese. Educational Technology facilities are poor and little used. Staff feel a strong need for a structured approach to seminar/tutorial activity, and this will need to be formally recognised by the College.
