Concluding Remarks
The comparison of the Senior Diploma programme at HKBC with the Higher Diploma programme at HKP is difficult to make because the objectives of each differ fundamentally. It can be said, however, that the intellectual demand on the student at HKBC and the depth of treatment of the subject material is such that if these objectives are achieved the Diplomates of the Senior Diploma programme at HKBC would be accepted as being at least of equal standing, academically, with their counterparts on the Higher Diploma programme of HKP. This assessment must be qualified by the statement that in terms of resource support and breadth of academic studies the students at HKBC are substantially disadvantaged by comparison with students at HKP.
After careful consideration of the detailed programmes offered at each institution and placing each in the context of the educational provision in Hong Kong, the following additional advice is given. The Hong Kong Baptist College shows such considerable potential for educational provision complementing that of Hong Kong Polytechnic, that substantial additional resource provision would prove to be a sound investment in tertiary education in Hong Kong.
In terms of the Department of Mathematics at HKBC, a substantial increase in staff remuneration would reduce significantly the high staff turnover and thus help to stabilise the Department. An increase in staff complement would provide students with the breadth of study that would be commensurate with the standing of the Senior Diploma Programme. There needs to be a substantial improvement in funding for the library and items of teaching equipment. Finally, the present provision for computing is totally inadequate for staff to prepare students for work. The basic provision for this type of college needs to be an interactive computing facility supported by specialist staff.
