It is felt that students emerging from the course have too limited a knowledge of important areas of the mathèmatical sciences. In particular, their knowledge is deficient in computing, statistics and computational mathematics. All the comments noted above apply equally well for the proposed programme of studies for the Senior and Honours Diplomas.

Educational Experience

HKBC Comment

Students are severely limited in terms of their exposure to a variety of teaching approaches. Indeed, on occasions, monetary impositions on the student act as a disincentive for them to benefit from even an extremely limited range of teaching materials. It is unlikely that there are any institutions in the UK where students are so severely handicapped in this respect.

Resource Support

HKP Factual

The levels of provisions in terms of Library, Computer Facilities and Educational Technology are adequate to support the programme of studies. The operating budget for the Department is adequate to support this level of course. The number of academic staff and the variety of subject specialists are at a level which ensures that academic interaction does take place, but the staff workload clearly restricts staff professional activities. The clerical support is adequate but the technician support, particularly in terms of access to computer programmers, is low.

HKBC Factual

The budget of HK$ 3000 per annum has to cover all headings other than staffing. The academic staff workload is extremely heavy and the number of staff is insufficient to permit the academic inter- action necessary to support curriculum development across all subject areas.

HKBC Comment
