MATHEMATICS

Introduction

It was found that the task of comparison was extremely difficult due primarily to the differing aims and objectives for the programmes at Hong Kong Baptist College (HKBC) and the Hong Kong Polytechnic (HKP) and also to the substantial differences in the resources available to each institution. The Senior Diploma programmes provides a sound understanding of fundamental mathematical concepts and aims to generate a student capacity for independent working. The comparator course at Hong Kong Polytechnic is vocationally oriented and gives the student a breadth of study in the mathematical sciences, embracing Mathematics, Statistics, Computing and Operational Research. This programme is structured to admit the possibility of exemption from some examinations of professional institutions.

It follows that the programme at Hong Kong Polytechnic is technically oriented and thus does not emphasise the rigour and abstraction inherent in the fundamentals of mathematics. This approach is consistent with the aims and objectives of the programme of studies and complements the provision at the Baptist College.

Student Input

HKP Factual

The minimum entry requirements are a Hong Kong Certificate of Education at grades C in Mathematics and grade E in four other subjects, one of which must be English. One other subject from a given list is also specified. In practice the competition for entry to the course is such that 85% of the students have at least two 'A' level passes.
