Laboratories

HKP Factual

There are three main chemistry teaching laboratories which are modern in style, but it is recognised that for the HD in Chemical Technology a further chemistry laboratory and enhancement of facilities for the technology component will be needed. There is no significant provision of space for staff research.

HKBC Factual

The three main teaching laboratories are very basic and of old design. The fittings are minimal and restrict severely the work which can be carried out. The facilities contravene accepted principles of safe working in laboratories.

HKBC Comment

Major improvements in the general laboratory facilities are absolutely essential to support the proposed programme and to establish safer working conditions. Much more room for staff research, project work and instrumentation needs to be provided; otherwise the space for general class teaching is adequate.

Technician and Administrative Staff

HKP Factual

Seven technician staff are allocated to chemistry together with two 'workshop teachers'. The administrative support staff comprises a departmental secretary, two typists, one clerical assistant and a filing clerk.

HKBC Factual

The four tutor/demonstrators provide useful back-up support for the laboratory teaching (including assisting in supervision as well as preparation of class materials). The sole technician is responsible (to the Head of Department) for general laboratory management, orders, etc, but spends a significant proportion of his time in instrumental work in the Chemical Testing Laboratory (in the main operating the atomic absorption facility).
