Resources to Support the Programmes

L

(a) Academic Staff

HKP Factual

Fourteen chemistry staff comprise the Chemical Technology section of the Applied Science Department. Nine have MSc/PhD degrees. It is recognised that about seven additional staff will be needed fully to implement the HD in Chemical Technology, with particular need for food technologist(s). Only 3 or 4 staff have active research/consultancy currently, but there are intentions to improve this situation. There is some contribution to research made by Research Assistants on one or two year contracts. The teaching load is spread over a range of courses (full-time, day-release, evening only). Current class contact loadings relate to agreed minima of PL = 12, SL = 15 and L/AL = 18 and loadings tend to average close to these values.

HKBC Factual

There are currently seven staff in chemistry, but one member is on full leave of absence during 1980-81 and two others are on reduced teaching load. All but one, who holds an MSc degree, have PhD's. Teaching is to be confined to the 2+2+1 scheme.

HKBC Comment

Contact hours are higher than desirable at this level. At least one additional member of staff is urgently required to teach the inorganic chemistry, but even then there will be a barely adequate staffing level to meet the full 2+2+1 programme. Although the staff are well qualified in research, there is a clear need to increase their academic/professional activities. As a group, their general level of quality/ability is very similar to that of their equivalents in HKP. Although their background is somewhat different, this is adequate to support the Senior Diploma scheme (with the exception of the area of inorganic chemistry).
