HKBC Comment

There is a distinct contrast between the level of the practical and theoretical elements. The general sequencing is unusual and undesirable, particularly the exclusion of physical chemistry in the first year of the senior studies. There are also instances of irrational

selection/sequencing within courses. These aspects do not seem to have been considered fully (if at all) by the staff as a whole.

Relation to Aims

HKP Factual

The lecture courses are expressed in terms of behavoural objectives and this has facilitated the direction of the programme towards general programme aims.

HKBC Factual

The aims of the Senior and Honours Diploma Programme have been stated above.

HKBC Comment

The nature of the aims of the programme are such that it could be argued that the content is not particularly relevant. Thus the courses in analytical chemistry do not relate easily to the aim of preparing students for analyst positions in industry. Similarly, although it is anticipated that many students will find careers in sales and marketing, there is no requirement for them to take courses in these subjects.

Teaching/Learning Methods

HKP Factual

These are traditional, but some educational technology equipment is used by staff, and students have access to audio/visual and other learning materials. The provision is centrally based although there is some local provision but this is little used. Handout material is used to a significant extent by most staff. No CAL is used. There is no use made of interactive computers in laboratory work, though open access facilities for statistical treatment of data (in another building) are used. Laboratory work is of standard style, with little "open-ended"
