The Education Department of the Hong Kong Government named the 2111 Applied Science Higher Diploma as the comparator for Chemistry, Physics and Biology and the 2402 Higher Diploma in Mathematics, Statistics and Computing as the comparator for Mathematics. Difficulties arose not only from the different emphases of the College and Polytechnic programmes, but also from the absence of Biology and virtual absence of Chemistry in the 2111 Polytechnic diploma, and the absence of Polytechnic Associateship programmes in the science areas which might have been compared with the college's Honours diplomas. The Biology group were, therefore, forced to look both at the general level in the sciences in the Polytechnic and at biology within medical laboratory and paramedical programmes. The Chemistry group considered the projected Higher Diploma in Chemical Technology (which might not operate) and the existing 2101 Diploma in Chemical Technology.
The visiting party received extracts from the Polytechnic's prospectus in regard to staff and programmes, the detailed descriptions of the 2111, 2402 and Chemical Technology Higher Diplomas, and the Polytechnic's Annual Report 1979-80. A visit to the Polytechnic took place on 5-6 January 1981 in order to collect information about the programmes, the teaching, staff, and resources. The visit arrangements allowed for a general introduction (covering also the visiting parties concerned with business studies and civil engineering), tours of specialist facilities, staff accommodation, library, learning resources and computer, a number of meetings with students and meetings with various groupings of staff; there was no institutional visit to the Polytechnic. Several members of the visiting party returned to the Polytechnic later to follow up particular areas of information.
There was an institutional visit to the Baptist College on 9 January 1981, and the reports of that visit and this science visit are inter-dependent and should not be seen separately.
Computer facilities have also been considered for the whole College and for the Polytechnic and a report is attached as an annex.
