In order further to explore the stability or otherwise of the staff, and the extent to which the College could rely on a core of expertise in support of its courses, the visiting party enquired about the length of tenure of the posts of staff. It was disturbing to members to learn that the profile showing dates of appointment was approximately as follows:
English
1975(1); 1977(1);
1978(3)
1979(3);
1980(3).
Sociology 1978(1); 1980(2).
Economics
1975(1);
1980(2).
Psychology 1978(1);
1980(1).

Clearly, stability of the staff was a major problem throughout the College, and this was a hindrance to planning in that so few of the staff had any real feel for the problems faced by the College in the past 2 or 3 years, or some of the significant contextual factors affecting its growth. Of the senior staff taking part in the meeting, Mr Mui Lok Wood and Professor Dewhurst had joined the College in 1980. Mr Stevenson in 1979 and Mr Knowles in 1977. The President explained that, for a variety of reasons, staff generally stayed at Lingnan for 1 or 2 years. It was the practice to offer only 1 year contracts with the option of renewal. It had also been learned in the meetings in the first week of the visit that the salary offered is approximately 50% of that of staff in the two Hong Kong Universities.

The College was organised in 3 faculties - Business Studies, Arts and Music. The Faculty of Music had a staff of only six (3 full time) and less than 20 students, so that the case for having a separate faculty was questionable, and it was not surprising that it hardly operated as a faculty in the normal sense. It proved difficult to establish clearly the respons- ibilities of the Deans as against those of the Heads of Department.
CAPITAL AND RECURRENT BUDGET
CNAA noted that the College had been reasonably successful in finding donors willing to gift substantial sums towards the cost of new buildings. However, members were disturbed to learn that the new auditorium could not
