I was telephoned this morning by a Mr Varney of the Civil Aviation Authority (telephone number 405-6922 ext 444). It emerged that his purpose was simply to put down a marker that the CAA might have useful input at any time when the subject of the new Hong Kong airport were being considered in the FCO. He said that he had attended a meeting in Canton about a month ago' to consider with the Guangdong Aviation Authorities some of the practical problems affecting Chinese air space which would arise from the establishment of a new airport. The Chinese had been pretty non-committal and had stated that the issues would need to be pursued through diplomatic channels. Mr Varney said that the substance of the meeting had been conveyed to the Political Adviser by the Hong Kong Civil Aviation representative at the meeting. He assumed that we would therefore have been briefed on it.
2.
I am not aware that we have been briefed on this meeting. If we have had no report from Hong Kong you may think it worthwhile to ask Dr Wilson for one.
