REPLACEMENT AIRPORT: POSSIBILITY OF A DEEP BAY SITE

There have been further developments on research into the possibility of a Deep Bay site since I last wrote to you on 11 September.

2.

The situation then was that a memorandum was being prepared for Exco which would recommend a feasibility study of a possible site in Deep Bay.

3.

It has now been decided that the consultants working on the Chek Lap Kok site should be asked first to do a quick study on: (a) whether a flight path just south of the border (the Fanling corridor) is feasible; and (b) what effect an airport in Deep Bay would have on development projects in the New Territories such as e.g. a new town at Tin Shui Wai or the new town at Sheung Shui. If this mini-study shows no insuperable obstacles, a recommendation for a full study will then be put to Exco.

4.

I have been keeping NCNA in touch, in general terms, about these developments and will do so also for this latest slight change.
