Thank you for the copy of your letter CRE 59584/1 of 18 December. I hope to attend your meeting on 30 January together with two other members of DI 73c, Suzanne Miles and Peter Balmer. In particular we would hope to be of assistance in any examination of China's overall economic position.
In this connection you will be interested to know that we, in conjunction with the Cabinet Office Assessments Staff, are attempting to produce a short paper on the general political and economic outlook for China out to the turn of the century, and are giving active consideration to producing a short note on the recent economic policy changes. If we go ahead with it, the latter should be finalised before the meeting. I do not think that the longer term paper will be ready, but I may be able
