RESTRICTED
Information Gathering
12. At the present stage of rapid change in China's trade policies and institutions,
up-to-date data must be collected and collated. This is absorbing an increasing
proportion of the China Unit's time. We shall continue to prepare papers for
dissemination to industry, as new information is received.
Conclusion
Position
13. Our aim should be to keep the pot simmering. By 1990, and hopefully in some
sectors by 1986, China should be a significant market for UK exporters.
should become clearer when a new 10 year plan (1981-90) is announced. But there
are many problems not yet resolved and probably many more to come. These should
not be under estimated and the market is one for the tenacious and those with the
necessary resources of time, money and manpower. Their Government's aim should be
to see that those UK companies which are the best prospective trading partners for
China do not give up in despair.
