Trust and Investment Companies

According to NCNA on 18 August, 22 international trust and investment companies and overseas Chinese investment companies have been set up in 16 Chinese provinces and municipalities. They have all mushroomed under the China International Trust and Investment Corporation (CITIC) set up in October 1979. The parent corporation, together with seven local subsidiaries (Guangdong, Guangzhou, Fujian, Shandong, Zhejiang, Tianjin and Peking) have in the past two years raised funds of US$108.25 million in medium and long-term loans from foreign banks and through deposits by overseas, Chinese. According to NCNA, these eight companies have provided funds fo? nine joint ventures and 45 cooperative enterprises involving Chinese and foreign investments. Total investment in the two forms of joint enterprise was $78 million and $79 million respectively.
Hong Kong-Shekou Ferry Service

Under the terms of an agreement with China Merchants Steam Navigation (CMSN) Co. Ltd., Hong Kong and Yaumati Ferry (HYF) Co. has secured Hong Kong Government approval to operate a hoverferry service to CMSN's Special Industrial Zone at Shekou. One hoverferry (with a seating capacity of between 65 and 92 passengers) will make two return trips daily from the Taikoktsui pier in Kowloon. The service is scheduled to start on 11 September.

A Guangdong radio broadcast on 21 August said that Hong Kong businessman, Li Ka-shing (Chairman and Managing Director of Cheung Kong (Holdings) Limited) had recently donated HK$60 million for the construction of a university
