initially at least, the number of applications should not exceed 670 (1.c. the estimated number of cooperative ventures in Shenzhen see "Shenzhen:Progress Report" 18 November, paragraph 13). At present, the number of crossings of the bridge by private motor cars (approved on an ad hoc basis to essential users) is some 90-100 per month.

Future crossing points. In the past year or so, Guangdong Provincial and Shenzhen Municipal leaders have expressed their interest in the construction of further road bridges at Lok Ma Chau, Man Kam To and Sha Tau Kok. Despite some initial confusion over the priorities attached to each project, Provincial Party 1st Secretary Ren Zhongyi has now confirmed that the first priority should be for the construct- ion of a bridge at Lok Ma Chau, then a second bridge at Man Kam To and finally a cross-border link at Sha Tau Kok. Although a proper survey of any crossing at Lok Ma Chau bas yet to be made, three possible approach routes have been identified on the Hong Kong side and options drawn for a low or high-level bridge. The approach routes and drawings have been delivered to NCNA for comment from the appropriate authorities in Guangdong.

Other road plans. Since late in 1979, officials in Guangdong have referred to Chinese plans to link Guangzhou and Shenzhen by a new road. In fact, work is currently in progress on the construction of a 12 metre-wide tar-sealed highway (following the existing dirt road) from Shenzhen to Huangpu (Whampoa) and the widening of the paved road between Huangpu and Guangzhou. Completion of this highway has been delayed through difficulties (technical and financial) in the construct- ion of three major bridges across the braids of the East River. (The inadequacy of the present road has prevented Inchcapes from being able to operate a coach service to Guangzhou: c.f. para-
