Numerous groups representing a wide range of interests have been protesting against the proposed increases in bus fares. Some have acted individually but many have united in forming larger bodies such as the "Coalition Against Bus Fare Increases" (CABFI), which claims to have the support of some 200 organisations representing over one million people, and the "Student Committee Against Bus Fare Increases", said to represent 20,000 post- secondary students. Both the Communist Federation of Trade Unions and the pro-KMT Trade Union Council have criticised the

increases and the two most senior officials in the former body attended a well publicised CABFI meeting. The extent of public feeling is difficult to gauge but there appears to be genuine concern over the hardship the increases will cause and the poor service provided by the bus companies. The situation is ripe for exploitation by pressure groups but no single body has as yet taken the lead. c. S. 1966

The clearance of an industrial resite area at Tai

Wo Ping was effected after some resistance and minor scuffling. Urban Councillor Mrs. Elsie Elliott, who had accompanied representatives of the factory owners to the UK in October 1980, was present at the clearance and attempted to involve the Governor

and senior Government officials in order to obtain a last minute

postponement. In general there was little public sympathy for

the factory owners concerned.

Students at the Chinese University have held a sit-in, conducted a signature campaign and presented a petition in protest against the enrolment policy for the planned Faculty of Medicine.

At the heart of the protest is concern over the possibility that the Chinese University may have to adopt a three, in place of the present four, year degree course.
