A recent address by a senior NCNA official in Hong Kong presages increased United Front efforts towards the
reunification of China and Taiwan. He ruled out the use of
military force and the staff were told to cultivate friendships with people connected with Taiwan, including overseas Chinese and local Hong Kong businessmen, especially those who supported the Taiwan cause. Special mention was made of sport : the
speaker said that hitherto China had insisted that Taiwan withdrew
from international sports bodies and events before China took part. This had now changed. China would participate so long as the Taiwan teams did not fly the Taiwan flag, play the Taiwan anthem or use the title "Republic of China", In future, Chinese teams would be allowed to play against those from Taiwan.

The various social events and ceremonies which were

The expedition to London by the three representatives
of the KMT backed and financed Wanderers' Association, aimed at drumming up opposition to Hong Kong's new policy of returning all illegal immigrants to China (para 20, December 1980 Report), must have been regarded even by them as a failure, although on return the trio claimed, unconvincingly, that it had been a success and worthwhile. They sought help, but got little change, from Amnesty and the UNHCR, protested outside the Chinese Embassy and, for the rest, had to content themselves with writing letters to eminent persons and the press. Despite this, they gained no publicity in the UK. Their plan to extend their tour to the USA in order to make protests in various quarters there foundered when they
were refused visas by the US Embassy.
