LABOUR AFFAIRS

19,

A number of unions affiliated to the left wing Federation of Trade Unions, including some within the public utilities and Government service, have submitted claims for pay increases to keep up with

inflation.

20.

In the non-communist labour sphere, ground staff of Cathay Pacific Airways went on strike for three days over pay and conditions of service. The dispute was settled with the acceptance by the staff of a 13.5% pay increase and a 5% travel allowance. The Association of Government Land and Engineering Surveying Officers went on a one day strike ostensibly over an alleged adverse annual report on the Association's Chairman. This reflects some animosity on the part of the local staff towards more senior expatriate officers.

KMT

21.

In its search for ways of embarrassing the C.P.G., the local KMT Organisation decided to support the newly formed Hong Kong Association for Solidarity with the Chinese Democratic Movement (para 23). This took the form of the alumni association of a pro-KMT college pledging support for the Association's efforts for the release of the Guangdong dissident, WANG Xizhe. Apparently related to this are vague thoughts being entertained by a pro-KMT youth group, the Freedom Lai Chi Association, of sending a delegation to Guangzhou to investigate WANG's arrest.

22.
