The Association for Democracy of Hong Kong Ltd. (para 24, April 1981 Report) has been largely inactive since its inauguration in March 1981 in the presence of MPs Robert Parry and Denis Canavan but it has recently announced that it

hopes to strengthen ties between Hong Kong and Macau and to press for improvements in housing and labour benefits in the latter. This is the first indication that the Association

intends to act as a pressure group in the social field.

From China

27.

Immigrants from China without onward travel documents

totalled 4,428 in August, a daily average of 143 which is once

again near the standard of 150 set by the Chinese.

The number of illegal immigrants arrested on first arrival in August was 520, giving a daily average of 17 which compares with the revised figures for June and July 1981 of 587 (20) and 482 (16) respectively and with August 1980 of

nearly 12,700 (409). Nearly two-thirds of the arrests were

of those who had crossed the land border.

29.

The

1,401 Vietnamese refugees arrived in 51 groups. Of these, 135 came from China having been settled there and one boatload of 32 had been rescued at sea by a merchant ship.
