CHINA AFFAIRS
A meeting of the Hong Kong and Macau Work Committee, the covert local group of leading NCNA officials and cadres which is responsible for the implementation of the CPG's policy for the two territories, is likely to be held in Beijing during the current Plenary Session of the National People's Congress. However, only the most senior members of the Committee WANG Kuang (First Secretary), QI Feng (First Deputy Secretary) and XIE Manjing (Deputy Secretary) are known to be currently
in China, probably for the Congress or the People's Political Consultative Conference and therefore attendance at the Work Committee meeting may be confined to them. No information on
the matters for discussion is available.

At their own request, a team of senior PSB officials responsible for immigration controls at the major Chinese points of entry visited Hong Kong for a week to be given an insight into the methods and procedures used by the Hong Kong Immigration Department. The visit went smoothly and the visitors appeared impressed by what they were shown. An interesting statistic they provided was that the 7 - 8 million travellers who cross the
border at Lo Wu annually represent more than half the total
movements into and out of China. In the immigration context this makes the Shenzhen Border Inspection Station the most important
in China.
