1. I attach a draft acknowledgement to the Governor's letter of
25 May to Sir E Youde concerning Sir Y K Kan's recent private visit 31A to Peking.
2. It is encouraging that Liao Changzhi went out of his way to
impress on Sir Y K China's understanding of the short-term problems
of confidence. It appears the point is sinking in. But we are under
no illusions that the Chinese will be prepared to bite on a solution
for some time to come.
