OPINION POLL ON 1997 - Part II
An Interview with Mr Andrew Wong, Lecturer of CUHK
(CHENG MING DAILY June 27, 1981 - a summary)
He
Mr Wong felt the result of this survey was very reasonable. didn't want to speculate on the feeling of the interviewees through the survey results, but preferred to talk about his own ideology on administration or politics.
On the possibility of turning Hong Kong into a Special Zone, Mr Wong · pointed out it might not be a good thing. In fact there has already becu a difference between living patterns in Shenzhan special zone and Hong Kong.
Maught
There would, also be difficulties in a Special Zone. Unless the border is closed, there may all be an influx of legal immigrants into the area. Besides, there would be foreign exchange controls restricting any withdrawal of foreign investments. Therefore, he is optimistic on HK's future as a special zone.
Regarding "emigration", Mr Wong said those much sought after professionals e.g. doctors, architects and computer-operators would tend to emigrate.
ON
Commenting Hong Kong's future, Mr Wong said there would be two possibilities. The decision makers in the UK and China would not make any change when the situation was still acceptable.
Both China and British are now enjoying benefits from Hong Kong. They would not wish to have any change. China would not propose any amendment to its policy unless Hong Kong's economy tends to slow down.
According to Mr Wong the next possibility was for China to take back Hong Kong. He said if China took back New Kowloon and the New Territories only, it would mean they had recognised the unequal treaties.
Turning to the possibility of renewing the lease, Mr Wong pointed out that a short term lease would give an impression that Hong Kong's present situation would be terminated sooner or later.
He said that even the lease was re-newed for another 99 years, people would still be doubtful on HK's future, as Chinese leaders might change.
On the possibility of Hong Kong to become independent, Mr Wong said
it was meaningness to talk about it on an isolated ground.
"However, we can say that Hong Kong, is an autonomous region in China, or if we go one step further, China is also an autonomous region in the world," Mr Wong said.
