LEASE PERIOD WILL NOT AFFECT INVESTMENT

MOST PEOPLE BELIEVE HK CAN MAINTAIN STATUS QUO IN LONG TERM

During yesterday's Pacific Basin Economic Council meeting, Mr Fung King-

He hey, Chairman of Sun Hung Kai Securities, read a thesis on 'China and HK'. said the lease period would not affect investment in HK.

He said in his thesis: "All of us are very concerned about the problem of 1997, and some regular development programmes overseas have also been mistakenly related to this problem.

"Most people in HK are confident that HK can maintain its status quo in a long term, and the period does not confine to 1997. To some foreign investors, although their representatives in IK are full of confidence, the views of their head offices on the legal and accountancy aspect would make them think about the

lease in the NT.

"From the viewpoint of China, HK is not a problem that needs to be settled quickly. HK has made some contribution to China, and it is expected that China would maintain stability and prosperity in HK for a rather long period, because no other place can replace HK.

"I trust both China and Britain will provide appropriate protection for the residents and investors in HK, and settle the historical problem of the lease.

"China is willing to protect investors in HK, because HK can make its contribution. The greater is the contribution, the stronger will be her willingness. to offer protection. HK will continue to survive after the 20th century. needs HK as it is, and she has reiterated her commitment to HK people.
