The Prime Minister has asked me to thank you for your letter of 19 May. She was glad that you thought her recent visit to Saudi Arabia and the Gulf was useful in creating a favourable climate towards the UK and British exporters.
The Prime Minister has noted your suggestion that she might consider visits to Hong Kong and Japan. While she has no fixed plans to do so at present, she hopes to be able to visit the Far East in due course. The Government are fully aware of the export potential of this dynamic area and will continue to take an active interest in opportunities for UK companies there.
In the meantime you will be aware that Lord Carrington carried out a successful tour of the region in April. In Hong Kong - he was able to announce that British industry had won a £550 million power station order in the territory. In Japan he had talks with Japanese Ministers concerned with trade and was able to explain the great importance we attach to establishing a healthier economic relationship. There will be further opportunities to discuss trade issues when the Japanese Prime Minister and other senior economic Ministers visit this country in the middle of this month.
