VISIT TO HONG KONG AND PEKING
1. Patrick williamson, the Head of our Hong Kong Section, is on secondment from the Hong Kong Government. He and his wife are having four weeks "home" leave in March and it has been agreed in principle between us and the Hong Kong Government that he should make a brief official familiarisation visit to China, which he has not previously visited, at the same time. He would be accompanied by his wife, Paula, who would travel at his expense.
2. The Williamsons intend to leave here on 2 March and then fly by BA from Hong Kong to Peking on 5 March. They would like to stay there for 3 days and then return to Hong Kong via Xian and Shanghai, spending 2 days in each.
3. We realise that you are always very busy and will be preparing for Lord Carrington's visit at the end of March, but hope that it will be possible for you to agree to these plans. The Williamsons would of course wish to cause you the minimum inconvenience, although Patrick would want to have some time at the Embassy dis- cussing the sort of subjects which I covered during my visit there last July. A call on the MFA might also be useful if you deemed it appropriate at the time.

I should be most grateful if you would let me know whether these proposals are acceptable in principle before we seek the financial authority from PSD for fares and subsistence.
