Forthcoming Visits by MPs

5

Members will wish to know of three shorter visits that are

in prospect by influential Members of both Houses of Parliament :

6

(a) Mr. David Steel (Leader of the Liberal Party) together with his wife, and Lord and Lady Tanlaw. Mr. Steel will be paying an official visit to China in April and he wishes to take the opportunity to visit Hong Kong for three days from 25 to 28 April.

(b) The following would take part in a trip

being organised by Lord Rhodes to China via Hong Kong in the later half of April :

Robert Sheldon (Labour)

Kenneth Warren (Conservative) Peter Brooke (Conservative)

Lord Ardwick (Labour)

Charles Morrison (Conservative)

Baroness Llewelyn-Davies (Labour) Lord MacKie (Liberal)

Lord Hunt

It is likely that the group with Lord Rhodes will have two-day programme in Hong Kong from 28 to 29 April.

(c) Mr. Peter Shore (Opposition Spokesman on

Foreign & Commonwealth Affairs). It is likely that Mr. Shore would visit Hong Kong for 3 days towards the end of May. He will also be visiting Japan and China.

Recommendation on Sponsored Visits of Members of Parliament During 1981-82 Sir Paul Bryan has suggested that as several ministers and Conservative MPs are visiting Hong Kong independently, there is no need for the Hong Kong Government to sponsor full 10-day visits for Conservative MPs during the coming financial year. Sir Paul suggests that it would be useful to invite senior Labour politicians who would not otherwise have the opportunity to visit and learn about Hong Kong.
