International issues
1. Good measure of agreement, though nothing particularly new. Concentrated particularly on East/West relations, Afghanistan and Cambodia. On US/China relations, the Chinese
said they were sure that Reagan and Haig wanted good
relations with China. Taiwan remained the crux.
Hong Kong
2. Chinese forcefully reiterated previous generalised
assurances on future of Hong Kong, both publicly and privately, but
showed no inclination to tackle the problem in detail at
present. We will watch for opportunities to feed in our own
ideas.
Internal situation
3. Chinese leadership preoccupied with getting the economy right. A difficult period. Some of Deng's policies obviously
being resisted. But Deng seems in control.
Trade
4.

Disappointing prospects for British exporters for 2 or 3 years. Stressed need for Chinese to have regard for
British interests. Zhao responded encouragingly.
Guangdong Nuclear Project ·
5. Stressed hope that British firms should participate. "Zhao indicated no decisions imminent but said we should
keep in touch.
Invitations
6. Invitations extended by Premier Zhao to Prime Minister
accepted in principe) and The Queen, (undertook to convey).
