Pakistan and the Far East. I attach a speaking note for
the Hong Kong section of the visit from 29 March to 1 April.
The Lord Privy Seal will have received copies of the briefing
material prepared for the visit.
2.
The Governor feels the visit went 'extremely well'.
Peking Telegram No 236 identifies the two main issues raised
in Hong Kong as the future of the Territory and the provisions
of the British Nationality Bill. This is reflected in the
record of the Secretary of State's Press Conference (Hong Kong
Telegram No 361).
3. Of the other issues raised, UK student fees and illegal
immigration from China attracted less attention due to measures
taken by the Hong Kong Government to ease these problems.
As stated in Peking Telegram No 236, the Secretary of State
wishes to report personally to his Cabinet colleagues on the
subject of Vietnamese Refugees in Hong Kong.
