SECRETARY OF STATES VISIT TO THE FAR EAST: ADVANCE PRESS BRIEFING
1.
We have been considering what advance briefing
for the press might be useful before the Far East tour. I do not think that we need ask the Secretary of State personally to conduct a series of interviews.
2.
I recommend that Lord Carrington should agree:
(a)
For Pakistan: a written question and answer
Х
interview for 'Dawn' newspaper.
(b)
For China: a written question and answer interview for 'The People's Daily' (last time round we did it for the New China News Agency). 'The People's Daily' will be host to a group of British correspondents after Easter.
(c)
For Japan: A written question and answer interview for 'Yomiuri Shimbun', supplemented by a very brief oral interview on a single topic of their choice.
3.
In addition, we propose to arrange separate unattributable briefings by officials for the London correspondents from Pakistan, Hong Kong and Japan. Mr A Donald will conduct
a curtain-raising briefing for British diplomatic correspondents (including those who will be travelling with us) on 25 March
13 March 1981
