The purpose of the meeting was to discuss prospects for British firms in the Hong Kong housing programme.

Mr Liao said he was very disappointed that his meeting with EGCI was not the gathering he had expected. He had instead been taken to Bracknell in Berkshire to meet some representatives of George Wimpey & Co whom he already knew. What he wanted to do was meet representatives of firms who had not so far done business in Hong Kong. As a secondary — tarret he wished to see firms already present in Hong Kong who required advice on improving their performance in the territory. He explained that the construction industry in Hong Kong had overheated because of the amount of building work on hand resulting in rapid increases in contract prices. Skilled labour was short and he envisaged UK firms assisting by providing further mechanisation, increasing capacity by systems building and the training potential in joint venture arrangements. He pointed out the French and Italians were moving in and it was possible to re-parcel contracts to suit UK firms. The typical parcel at present was £10 million for the construction of 3 to 4,000 flats.
3.
It was agreed that CRE and PEP would contact the type of company Mr Liao wished to meet in order to organise a meeting either in a group or individually on one of his free days.
