The China Travel Service in Fujian decided at a meeting that centrally controlled transport services to the province will be operated between January 21 and February 18, 1981.

B. Through bus services

The Hong Kong Government and the Guangdong authorities agreed last April to allow the Motor Transport Company of Guangdong and Hong Kong (MTCGH) (A

HIRKA) to operate a limited bus service between Hong Kong and Guangdong, it was reported on May 1, 1980.

The manager of MTCGH, Mr. Wong Tong, said in January this year that the through bus service between Hong Kong and Guangdong would start in April, 1981.

The service was originally scheduled to start before Christmas last year but was postponed because of delay in the construction of a customs office and roads in China.

Thirty air-conditioned buses with a seating capacity of 40 to 50 each have been ordered from Chua Heng Industries of Singapore and twelve of them have already been delivered to the company.

The bus service will initially run between Hong Kong and Guangzhou as well as Shantou and is expected to be extended to ten other towns later, including Meizhen (K), Wuizhou (H), Tongguan (), Taiping (★ 4), Danshui (K), and Haifeng(海防)

The company announced last September that a one-way trip to Guangzhou would cost $52.50 and a round trip $89.30 while a one-way trip to Shantou would cost $104.30 and a round trip $177.30. However, the fares might be adjusted to meet fuel and operating costs.

The company comprises Inchcape Enterprises Limited (英之傑企業有限公司 ) the Guangdong Provincial Bureau of Traffic (*****) and China Merchants Steam Navigation Company (5)

Early last year, British Transport Minister Norman Folwer and Hong Kong's Commissioner of Transport, Mr. Alan Armstrong-Wright, visited China separately to discuss with Chinese authorities measures to cope with the growing need for transport sergvice between Hong Kong and Guangzhou. The conclusion was that a through bus service should be introduced.

Early this month, it was reported that plans for the through bus service might fall through because the Inchcape Group had informed the Chinese authorities that it would withdraw from the joint venture if China failed to improve roads on the Chinese side of the border.

C. Through train services

A direct express through train passenger service between Kowloon and Guangzhou was resumed on April 4, 1979 after a 31-year break.
