in the Vietnamese Trade Mission and seemed especially interested in meeting private Vietnamese businessmen. (Comment: Zhou has apparently been actively seeking out sources of information on Indochina. He had previously asked Professor Tretiak for introductions to people who followed Vietnamese affairs.)
Zhou said he met his future wife in Kunming in 1946 when she was also a student at Associated Southwestern Universities. They were married in the early 1950's in Beijing and she is also a reporter for People's Daily. He has three children, all daughters. The oldest is 29 and works as a librarian in Beijing. Zhou's wife and children did not accompany him to Hong Kong and he does not expect them to join him.
In addition to being a native speaker of Vietnamese, Zhou speaks Mandarin, Southern Fujian and Cantonese (which he told me he had spoken in his home in Vietnam). His English is very limited but he expressed interest in improving it while in Hong Kong.
