United Front

Recent sport and entertainment activities in Hong Kong and China have provided an avenue for united front work: China representative riders competed at the International Motocross Championships in Hong Kong and a Hong Kong ladies football team visited China. Arrangements are being made for a gymnastics group from the Hong Kong Gymnastics and Mar .ial Arts Association to visit China in the near future. The Kaifeng Circus is performing in Hong Kong and the Peking Martial Arts Group is expected to perform here soon on their way back to China from a tour of Europe.

LABOUR AFFAIRS

In the non-communist labour field the month witnessed several civil service unions petitioning Government House in an effort to publicise their campaigns.

In an effort designed to publicise themselves amongst civil service unions, the Liaison Office of Public Service Unions organised a two-day seminar on "Union Propaganda Work".

The Hong Kong Seamen's Union (HKSU) and the communist controlled Yick Fung Shipping Company were ordered by NCMA officials to reach a speedy and amicable settlement of a dispute that arose when the HKSU supported claims for high compensation made by the widow and family of a Yick Hung seaman who was accidentally killed on board a Yick Hung ship in January 1981. Both parties are now willing to allow the affair to be settled in a civil court. The incident is said to have caused severe embarrassment in communist circles and a full report on the incident is expected to be submitted to the NCNA.
