Purpose

To ensure that the approved secondary schools building pro- gramme proceeds on schedule.

To make changes in the administration and operation of the current Government student travel subsidy scheme with a view to extending it to other public transport companies.

Progress-made and present position

The Schools Building Review Committee met on 10 July to consider progress in respect of schools in the Schools Building Programme.

(a) On 13 May, Finance Committee

voted the funds for the extension until the end of the current school year of the existing scheme of subsidies for students travelling on public transport, to the Mass Transit Railway. Corporation, the Hong Kong & Yaumati Ferry Company Ltd., and the New Lantau Bus Company. (1973) Limited.

(b) On 22 July, Finance Committee

voted the necessary funds for the implementation in September 1981 of the new student travel scheme which will enable all full-time students over the age of 12 years; including University students, to travel at concessionary fares on all franchised public transport modes, the Mass Transit Railway and the Kowloon-Canton Railway, for all journeys including travel at weekends and holidays except for certain stipulated routes and services.

To handover res- ponsibility for this issue to Secretary for the Environment for implemen- tation.
