MOTION FOR THE WHITSUN ADJOURNMENT

M.Let

13 May.

1. The Motion for the Whitsun Adjournment is expected to be debated in the week beginning Monday 18 May (Parliament rises for the Spring Adjournment on 22 May). The Leader of the House (Mr Francis Pym) has asked for briefing material for his use in winding up the debate.

#1

2. Briefing is required on any matter which may be raised by backbenchers as reasons why "the House should not adjourn. The Whitsun debate will however occur within about six weeks of the debate on the Motion for the Easter Adjournment which took place on 6 April and I have arranged with the Leader of the House's Office that we can do an updating/revision exercise on the previous briefs as required, with additional briefs in the light of events since Easter.

3.

I accordingly attach the list of the 53 briefs submitted for the Easter debate, together with the Departmental allocation. These Departments should urgently consider whether any updating/revision is required. If so, please redraft. If not, I should be grateful if Departments would contact me as soon as possible (I hold the master copies of all the Easter briefs).

4. As regards additional briefs, I make only one suggestion:

Singapore: political detainees

SEAD

All Departments should however consider whether material on other topics should be offered. If so, please discuss with Parliamentary Unit.

5. I should be grateful if any new or revised briefs could reach me by close of play on Wednesday 13 May.

6. Please pass the attached note on the presentation of briefs to your Secretarial staff.
