As the Chief Manager of the Hong Kong branch of the Chartered Bank, which is one of the two note issuing banks, Mr. Brown has an important place in the banking community, which is only exceeded by that of the Chairman of the Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation. He has, like his predecessors, involved himself in local affairs to an extent which probably sub- stantially exceeds the local involvement of managers of other overseas branches of the Chartered Bank. This greater degree of involvement in local affairs is made possible by the rather special situation in Hong Kong, but the wider general knowledge which flows from it brings additional but unquantifiable
