Jardines are traditionally regarded as the typical and leading foreign hong. Mr. Newbigging is representative of expatriate commercial interests in Legislative Council. Generally quiet and unassuming, he is intelligent and normally pertinent in his remarks. Basically a shy individual but has a tendency to cover this shyness at times by being assertive.
A jovial and friendly personality, he is an enthusiast of outdoor sports and a connisseur of Chinese art. His special interest is horse racing; he is a Steward of the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club.
