There are no permanent natural springs, and water supply depends on catchment tanks. A diesel driven generator provides electricity for approximately four hours each evening and two hours on Sunday mornings. A simple telephone system operates on the Island, and overseas communications are maintained by cable and surface sea

mail.

The local government prepares estimates of recurrent and non-recurrent expenditure which are incorporated into an annual budget in the Governor's office. 1979/80 figures are as follows:- Revenue NZ$490,000; Expenditure NZ$320,000.
