Appointment of Governor:

Hong Kong

The Prime Minister and the Secretary of State discussed some time ago the question of who should succeed Sir Murray MacLehose as Governor of Hong Kong. They agreed that Sir Edward Youde would be the best candidate, subject to confirmation that he was fit enough to undertake the duties.

As the Prime Minister knows, Sir Edward Youde has recently undergone a coronary bypass operation which was fully successful. In consequence, the Medical Advisers have passed him fit. Lord Carrington would therefore propose to recommend Sir Edward Youde's appointment to The Queen.
