SENIOR STAFFING:
ST HELENA
1. Please see Mr Hall's minute and draft which I have amended somewhat.
2.
There is no doubt that Mr Brooks is a good officer whom we wish to retain. We also have an identified vacancy for him, although it would not be right to guarantee it.
3. I am, however, in two minds about Mr Gillett. We do not want to plant a dud on POD and do ourselves no good; we do not want to be unfair to him. It would, I think, be right to obtain WIAD's and Mr Massingham's comments on him and his suitability for further employment fairly smartly so he is not left in uncertainty for too long. We should then minute POD either seeking employment for him or not. Do you agree? WIAD have already given a prelim- inary view on Mr Gillett in paragraph 5 of the attached draft; maybe they could also fill us in on developments connected with Mr Gillett's education claims.
4. We owe Mr Brooks a followup to our telegram 26 of 17 February (folio 5 on attached file). I attach a draft which I have cleared with WIAD.
