(b) to identify and recognise the specific needs, characteristics

and problems, at various stages of human development, of the physically, mentally or socially handicapped, the institutionalised,, and of different age groups living together as a family unit;

to gain a general perspective of the range and objectives of social services, in particular the welfare services, provided by the Social Welfare and other Departments and by the voluntary agencies in meeting these common and specific human needs;

(d) to distinguish the philosophy, principles, values and ethics of

social work;

(e) to acquire and develop skills in working with individuals, families,

groups, communities, the physically, mentally or socially handicapped, and the institutionalised in the units of service administered by the department; and

(f) to acquire and develop skills in the management of social work

units and the supervision of staff in the Government setting.

Course Duration and Methods of Training

Participants of the course are released from their jobs for 10 weeks of classroom teachings spread over an 8 months period. The course teachings are delivered through:

(h) class assignments.

In addition, there are:

(a) Tutorials

Two tutorial sessions, held by the course instructors with each individual participant and/or in the form of groups, are arranged within the 8 months' period, to meet the different individual training needs of the participants.

(b) Visit

Within the 8 months, the participants are visited once at their place of work by the course instructors who also discuss with the former's supervisors the rolevance of the training programme to the former's work.

(c) Supplementary Staff Development Programmes

Outside the 8 months' period, supplementary seminars or workshops will be organised for the Senior Social Work Assistents on specific areas of work or topics of interest as further staff development programes open to all officers of that rank,
