Course Aim

To provide basic social work training to Social Work Assistants and Senior Social Work Assistants converted from Principal Welfare Assistants, Welfare Assistants, Principal Welfare Suporvisors and Welfare Supervisors who do not possess a Certificate or Diploma in Social Work from a recognised social work training institution, so that they may be better equipped with the knowledge and skills required in performing their duties.

Duties of the Social Work Assistant/Senior Social Work Assistant

Social Work Assistant:

(a) to undertake simple casework;

(b)

to provide rehabilitation and child care service;

(c)

to work with groups including supervision of part-time workers in the implementation of community and youth projects;

(a) to supervise and provide training and counselling to persons

under care in the institutions administered by the department; and

(e) to carry out such other duties as may be required.

Senior Social Work Assistant:

(a) to undertake casework;

(b) to supervise staff dealing with care and rehabilitation of

persons in institutions, howes and centres administered by the department;

(c) to work with groups and members of the community in the implementation

of community and youth programmes and supervise staff and volunteers engaged in such activities,

(a) to assist in the day-to-day administration of an institution, home

or centre, or take charge of a small centre;

• (c) to work in the Child Care Centre Advisory Inspectorate carrying

out inspection, advisory and registration duties in accordance with the legislation governing child care centres; and

(f) to carry out such other duties as may be required.

Course Objectives

This course is designed to develop the basic skills and knowledge required in front line social work practice, with special reference to the actual duties of the Social Work Assistants and Senior Social Work Assistants, from which examples will be taken to be expounded into the principles and theories of social work. The course aino at enabling the Social Work Assistants and Senior Social Work Assistante:

(a) to identify and recognise the common human needs found at various

stages of human growth and development:
