NEW NATIONALITY LEGISLATION
1.
Mr David Hunt MP has spoken to Mr Luce on his return from a visit to Hong Kong about the concern in the Colony about the new nationality proposals. Mr Hunt reported that feelings were running high. Importance is attached to the title of their particular citizenship but they would not necessarily demand that 'British subject' be retained. Some form of words should be found to cover their special relationship with us, and 'British' would need to be part of the title. Mr Luce supports this. The important thing is not to formulate a title that would seem to distance Hong Kong from Britain.
2. On the bill as a whole, Mr Luce will be pleased to attend the H&SAC meeting on 19 June. He will require a full brief clearly setting out what we hope to achieve on his return from his current overseas visit, and I should be grateful if the brief could reach me by mid-day on 17 June.
