NEW NATIONALITY LAW: CITIZENSHIP OF CHILDREN OF CERTAIN CATEGORIES

We have been considering the proposals discussed between our officials for the provision in the Nationality Bill dealing with transmission of citizenship to children born abroad of certain categories for whom the FCO has an interest the British Council, HM Overseas Civil Service, British employees of international organisations, OSAS personnel working on aid projects overseas, and UK expatriates working for colonial governments.

I am writing to let you know that we agree with the provisions which your officials are drafting. As we understand them they are as follows:

The provision for children of Crown Servants would be so drafted as to cover Crown Servants on secondment to international organisations, British Council staff overseas and member of HM Overseas Civil Service; and would provide that existing children of Crown Servants would be deemed to be British citizens by birth as from commencement of the new Act, a point to which our staff side attach great importance and we share their view.
