As part of the development of Tsuen Wan New Town, Sam Tung Uk was completely vacated in April 1980, its residents being re- housed in new accommodation. The village is now Crown property. The engineering works around the village, which include a road system and a MTRC depot and podium construction, will take at least 2 years to complete (i.e. in mid-1982), during which there will be no access to the village. A long period of non-use, during which exposure to and damage by weather is inevitable, will necessitate some protection and caretaking service,

It has been agreed that part of the local open space develop- ment for this area should be reserved for open space around the village. The Secretary for the New Territories advises that the open space within the area to be declared a monument is considered to be an integral part of the village, as it will enhance its appearance and provide a proper setting for the village.
Future Use of the Village

After considering a number of alternatives, and consulting the Director of Urban Services, it is proposed that the restored village be used as a local history museum under the management of the Urban Services Department and in consultation with the Tsuen Wan District Advisory Board, subject to the provision of funds by the Finance Committee of the Legislative Council.
