Our initial inquiries revealed that as a result of Dr Stumpf's contacts with both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs here, and with Lutherhjälpen, a Mr Tarrenias of Lutherhjälpen had made himself responsible for arranging a programme. Tarrenias' return from leave and just before Dr Stumpf and Miss Lee arrived, we agreed that the Embassy should set up a programme for Friday 23 May,
the only day which was still free.
3. On Wednesday 21 May Dr Stumpf and Miss Lee visited Lutherhjälpen and, afterwards, a re-settlement centre at Flen, which they told me had impressed them greatly. On Thursday 22 May they called on the Labour Market Ministry and Board, the Swedish authorities with principal responsibility for refugees, and Dr Stumpf reported the outcome of that day's discussions in our telno 2 of 23 May to the Governor. The programme we had, arranged for Friday 23 May consisted of calls at Swedish Radio (the Swedish BBC equivalent), Dagens Nyheter (the largest circulation Stockholm daily), a lunch with the competent MFA official and a call on the Social Democrat (the Opposition and largest single Swedish party) International Secretariat.
